Book Review: Who's Afraid of Jane Austen - How to Really Talk About Books You Haven't Read, by Henry Hitchings
This came to me as a freebie with an order of other things last year, so it wasn't exactly a chosen title, but I decided not to discard it until I'd read it.

According to the back of the book, it can be filed under "Literature" or "Gift", yet the title and the blurb suggest "Humour" to me. In fact, having read it, I'm still not really sure of its intentions. I don't think it's really intended as a bluffer's guide; whilst it does sketch one or two plots and gives you a canned opinion here and there, you really would have to be a bluffer to get by. But it's not exactly laugh-out-loud either. I'm not saying I didn't learn anything from it, but ironically I suspect it's a better read if you actually have read more of the books discussed.
