Last night's opening part of How Music Works was surprisingly good. As someone with an amount of musical training, it helped me to fill in some of the gaps, particularly around developments in musical temperament, though in a more accessible way and without ever using such technical terms. Howard Goodall's enthusiasm helped things along; whilst obviously simplified, it didn't feel too dumbed-down to me. I suspect professional musicians would look upon its unashamed populism with disdain, whilst those without any musical background would never touch it. Anyhow, I shall try to tune in (ha ha!) for the rest of the series.
