Der Rosenkavalier

On Saturday kharin and I met up with rosamicula at Cafe Ciao, where we proceeded to appropriate levels of sugary decadence before making our way to the Coliseum, to see Richard Strauss' opera Der Rosenkavalier.

I think the main difficulty is that you just don't think "comedy" and "Richard Strauss" (not one of the family) together. In fact this is arguably a very traditional comical operatic plot, of aristocracy and social climbing, arranged marriages and unrequited love, manners, cross-dressing and cross-cross-dressing. It works but, without being specific, I wonder whether it could have done with a few cuts. The first act in particular seemed a bit laboured; and whilst the second and third were more direct, the ending also seemed a bit drawn out. The singing was good, and the staging was quite acceptable, but unimaginitive in comparison to what we'd seen for The Mikado a few months ago.
