Book Review: The Uncommon Reader, by Alan Bennett
As you would expect, this is clever and witty writing. The storyline is a mixture of the mundane and the far-fetched, cataloguing the consequences when the Queen discovers a mobile library parked outside Buckingham Palace, but if you are prepared to allow it to follow its course, it works. Obviously in a slim novella, there isn't much written depth, though one feels there's quite a lot in-between the lines. It's original, but the formula is perhaps one part The Queen, one part Yes Minister, one part The Madness of King George, and finally one part M C Escher.
