Book Review: Struts 2 in Action, by Donald Brown, Chad Michael Davis and Scott Stanlick
We are starting to use Struts 2 at work, and I wanted to find out more about the framework, especially as it is very different from Struts 1 which I have used elsewhere. This book is a fair but not brilliant guide to the framework. It's a shame that the website takes a Wiki-based approach and is very weak in documentation compared to other frameworks such as Spring, over which I think it has considerable advantages at the pure web tier (compared to Spring MVC, rather than Spring as a whole). The book fills out the essentials, but doesn't really offer much in the way of advanced usage; URL mapping is the main area I really need to get to grips with, but I didn't find much to clarify matters here. The examples are often rather half-hearted, such as cases where the example code changes, and the example output remains the same, but by accident rather than by design; it seems to me that the effort invloved in explaining that in the text would have been better spent on producing a better example. Still, I have learnt from it and it's a useful summary of the basics to have around.
