Topsy Turvy

Having failed to be organised, I felt quite lucky that further performances of ENO/Mike Leigh's production of The Pirates of Penzance were announced, and we got tickets for the final performance last night.

From what I'd heard, I was expecting a very traditional G&S production; in fact it was somewhat traditional but with one of ENO's minimalist sets. The plot is threadbare; to parody Mike Leigh's own parody, our tale begins in a magical land - or, in this instance, as it is also known, Cornwall. I have to admit, although I enjoyed it, it's really only worth it for the set-pieces: to some extent the policemen's song; and, of course, the superb Major-General's song. (Or, if you prefer, Tom Lehrer's version).
