The music meme
Of all the bands/artists in your cd/record/mp3 collection, which one do you own the most albums by?
Probably Philip Glass, but Beethoven, Mahler, Shostakovich and Sibelius are all strong contenders too.
What was the last song you listened to (voluntarily)?
The National Anthem of the Azerbaijani SSR.
What's on your record player right now?
"The National Anthems of the USSR and Union Republics", recently purchased from the Museum of Communism in Prague.
What song would you say sums you up?
The line "Dark is Life, Dark is Death" from Das Lied von der Erde strikes a chord.
What's your favorite local band?
Does the LSO count?
What was the last show you attended?
What was the greatest show you've ever been to?
Difficult to say. I've been going to the Proms for over 10 years. As a teenager there were some very good classical concerts at Newcastle City Hall, too. In the past few years, Parsifal, the Coronation of King George II, and the Great British Film Music proms all stand out.
What's the shittiest band you've ever seen in concert?
Some are better than others, but I'm quite selective and I don't remember anything that was that bad. But perhaps ironically I found much of the classical music on offer at Oxford pedestrian and unimaginitive in comparison to that in Newcastle. It's probably because of the proximity of London - Newcastle is very much a provincial capital.
What band/artist do you love musically but hate the members of?
Wagner? Though his views were not entirely out-of-step with his time, and I imagine many other composers and artists also had quite disagreeable personalities.
What is the most musically involved you have ever been?
I've played the piano since I was about 8; I played the oboe for a couple of years when I was at school.
What show are you looking forward to?
Nothing planned as yet, but I missed Das Rheingold at the Proms this year (three in a week would have been too many), so I don't want to miss Die Walküre next year.
What is your favorite band shirt?
I have a Proms 2004 T-shirt.
What musician would you like to hang out with for a day?
Brendel or Rattle. But the latter only if he promised not to do anything too "challenging".
What musician would you like to hump for a day?
Sabbath or solo Ozzy?
Commodores or solo Lionel Richie?
What was the greatest decade for music?
Probably the 1790s - late Haydn, early Beethoven. And Mozart died in 1791.
How many music-related videos/dvds do you own?
Topsy-Turvy, Fantasia/Fantasia 2000.
What is your favorite movie soundtrack?
Koyaanisqatsi. Did you need to ask?
What's the crappiest CD/record/etc you've ever bought?
Reich remixed was disappointing.
Do you prefer vinyl or CDs?
CDs. And, as they say in Dead Ringers, I am one of "those sad digital radio boys". DAB is wonderful.
All totalled, how much do you spend on music in a month?
I'd guess it averages around a tenner but it's very variable. CDs, concerts (and for the Proms, do you count it as £4 for the ticket, or £4 + £2.50 for a programme + £14.70 for the train/tube?)
