Call me old fashioned, but ...

In previous elections I seem to recall all the (major) parties made a big thing about not playing the race card, but it does seem as though that Transylvanian immigrantcharming Michael Howard is doing almost exactly that. I have no problem with the idea that immigration must be managed; I have no problem with the idea that asylum seekers could be 'managed' and potentially redistributed by groups of countries working together. (It always strikes me as just a teeny bit odd that, if you're supposed to claim asylum in the first safe country you arrive in, people travel thousands of miles to get to the UK). But I do have a problem with the idea that we could unilaterally withdraw from our international obligations and impose some sort of quota. Sorry, no room at the inn, no matter what circumstances. Doesn't really work for me.

And another thing. I have this naïve idea that deciding who should run the country is about who would run the country in the best way for all its people. So campaigning on the grounds of telling me that I'll be better off because of handouts/tax and spending cuts/whatever doesn't tell me why that is better for the country as a whole. (Not that anyone is actually offering me any money in that regard, so far as I can tell).
